It started in Asau village in 1968 when the late Tufuga Fatu and his wife Misileti established Bus
Business by converting their plantation Bedford truck into a bus. The initiative – Gataula Transport was established because there was no public transportation provided by anyone on that remote part of Savai’i Island. Asau village is located on the North Western side of Savai’i and the cocoa and timber industry were on boom. The Asau Township grew quickly and the wharf was the outlet for the timber products. But the roads around the island and connection to the main township in Salelologa, were not tar sealed, incomplete and very difficult to travel.
By 1977, the original Gataula bus business has a fleet of five wooden buses. The Gataula name is significant as Asau village is nicknamed “ai gata” (snake eaters) because a lot of (harmless) snakes are found in the area. Hence the Gataula transport brand. As time went by, migration to Apia, Upolu Island was inevitable. And so was the Gataula bus business now operating in a bigger market.
Stepping into the new Millenium and the new age of technology, the Gataula Transport business changed its legal status into a private company and recreated its image by
combining the names of the founders Tufuga and Misileti Fatu to Misiletifatu Transport. We purchased our first readymade air conditioned Daewoo buses in October 2002 and more followed in 2004 and the latest addition in 2007, adding to the fleet of very popular wooden buses. The colourful schemes of our brand, have found the Misiletifatu buses on postage Stamps, Postcards and glossy pages of Travel Magazines around the world. It is that Misiletifatu service and experience that we want to share with you.
